Meet Mike Hawkins
Our resident trainer, Mike Hawkins, specializes in AQHA All Around Events including Western Pleasure, Western Riding, Trail, Halter, Horsemanship, Showmanship & Hunt Seat Equitation for riders of all ages and abilities from novice to advanced riders and horses from green prospects to veterans.
The program is designed with long term goals as a main priority. The mission is building confidence and promoting longevity in horses along with developing confident, capable, independent riders. Accomplishing these goals requires structuring and implementing individualized plans for each horse and rider team in the most positive, constructive and enjoyable ways possible.
Having begun riding and showing with Clarke Bradley then working for such outstanding professionals as Doug Lilly, Dave Page and Carol Harris, Mike started his own training business 30 years years ago. He moved to Sierra Vista Ranch in February, 2013 after having been based in Florida since 1987. His very capable associate, Rachel Morrill, who has worked with him since 2004 also made the move and rounds out the team.
Mike is a past President of the Florida Quarter Horse Association and has been an NSBA judge since 1993 and an AQHA judge since 2009. He has previously judged NSBA World and AQHA Select World Shows. He has trained and showed multiple Western Pleasure winners at the Tom Powers, Southern Bell, and The Little Futurity. He was the Intermediate World Champion and Open Top Ten finisher in Western Riding and Intermediate Reserve World Champion in Western Pleasure at the 2012 AQHA World Show.
Mike's daughter, Megan Hawkins, is following in the family footsteps of riding and competing in the Quarter Horse world. Megan attends the University of Georgia as an NCAA Scholarship Equestrian Team member and currently shows as an Amateur. She has been a Congress Non-Pro Open Maturity Reserve Western Pleasure Champion, and has been Congress Top Five in Youth Horsemanship and Showmanship.
